Jiyuu is a Shoujo Manga Hero (Not Really...)
I have been watching Honey Lemon Soda recently and then this shot came up.
I was like, "JIYUU AND KISA??" And this scene happened:
“You know, this is why people say you’re dating,” Kanako says as she steps into the school roof after just observing for a while.
“Neechan.” Jiyuu actually bothers to acknowledge her for once, eyeing her unamusedly from his supine position on the bench he shares with Kisa. He occupies most of it but about half of his long legs hang over the side.
Beside him, Kisa gives a slight smile tinged with weary amusement. Unlike Jiyuu, she’s sitting up properly with her bento box open on her lap. As always, her lunch is immaculate and balanced with meat, vegetables and rice.
“Jiyuu-kun’s not using me as a lap pillow, though.”
“You’re eating,” Jiyuu points out idly.
Kisa actually giggles at that. “Like that’s stopped you before.”
“Kori might not like it…”
And as Kisa blushes, Kanako sighs and makes herself comfortable on the floor before them. With how short she has folded her skirt, it’s a miracle she hasn’t flashed anyone yet. Or been reported. It’s probably the latter. It’s an unspoken thing but hoshiko are always treated with some level of partiality in this school that Kanako, Kisa and Jiyuu have entered.
“So are you? Dating, I mean,” Kanako asks as she opens up the paper wrapping of her school-bought sandwich.
Jiyuu gives her another lazy side-eye and Kisa sighs around a rolled egg.
“No, Kana-chan.”
Kanako nods slowly as she bites on her sandwich and makes a soft, pleased noise. “So cheesy!”
Jiyuu deigns not to answer and sips from a soy milk box.
“That’ll just leave you hungry fast, Jiyuu,” Kanako comments to her younger brother as she watches him.
A protein bar is idly waved at her in reply.
Kisa picks up a piece of rolled egg with her chopsticks. She holds it out to Jiyuu to eat a moment later.
“Here.”
Jiyuu moves just enough to get the bit of food into his mouth then chews quietly.
Kisa goes back to her lunch like nothing happened.
Kanako shakes her head at them.
“You two are far too comfortable with each other, I swear.”
Kisa holds out a rolled egg for Kanako too and she leans to eat it without missing a beat.
“Look who’s talking, Neechan.”
“Kisa-chan and I are best friends!” Kanako argues swiftly, though with little force and vehemence to it. “You two just look like you stepped out of a shoujo manga so people are talking!”
Which is somewhat true.
Jiyuu with his tall, blond, and everything along with his cool and aloof bearing except with his sister and Kisa. He’s polite and courteous enough with girls but only ever seems to go the extra mile for Kisa. Kanako doesn’t even seem to get the same courtesy most of the time though he has thrashed guys who have even just looked at her wrong.
Kisa who is pretty and petite in that quiet, dark-haired way shoujo heroines tend to be. She’s not exactly shy, but she’s calm and reserved. She has a serious and studious reputation, but Jiyuu almost always seems to be able to make her laugh.
Then there’s the height difference.
Kisa only comes up to somewhere along Jiyuu’s chest after his growth spurt. Sometimes, Jiyuu even comes up behind her and leans over her head. It’s a close, protective stance according to shoujo manga standards, but Kisa knows he’s just being lazy and she’s a convenient heater and chin rest.
Jiyuu tilts his head back a bit so he can actually look at Kisa. “How about it, Kisa? Should you kabedon me to a wall sometime? Tomorrow before classes?”
Kisa laughs at the suggestion, no blushing or embarrassment in sight. “I think that’s a different flavor of manga that you’re taking that from, Jiyuu-kun.”
Jiyuu hums noncommittally as he goes back to facing forward, arms coming up to cross behind his head. “I don’t really get the hype about a kabedon. Looks threatening to me…”
From in front of them, almost completely being ignored, Kanako sighs in what sounds like exasperation. “You are definitely not shoujo manga material, Jiyuu. Don’t worry…”
“Well good.”
“People still think you’re going out, though.”
“Stop making me bring your cookies to Kisa, then, Oneechan.”
“You guys are on the same floor!”
Kisa smiles to herself as she listens to the siblings bicker.
Jiyuu coming to her classroom with homemade cookies is always an event. How he stands tall by the door, intent violet eyes searching for her and only easing when she’s found. He ignores everyone else but Kisa, unless he has to ask someone for her, and hands over the cookies with just a nod and a wave. Sometimes he asks if they’re eating together for lunch. Then he leaves.
It probably looks like a sweet gesture, a shoujo manga hero going against his cold, uncaring facade to do something nice for the unsuspecting heroine.
None of her swooning classmates know that Jiyuu has definitely stolen one or two cookies by the time they have been handed over to her, payment for running the errand for his pushy elder sister. Jiyuu also has nothing whatsoever to do with baking the cookies.
Jiyuu is not as secretly sweet as her besotted classmates may fantasize, at least not with Kisa herself.
Who knows when Jiyuu has finally found someone to be sweet like that for.
Kisa has tried to clear it up with her friends and classmates, but it seems to be falling on deaf ears. In the end, she has decided to let them think what they want and build up the Jiyuu-Akari-is-a-shoujo-hero lore. It’s amusing and something to laugh about during days when Kisa tries not to think about the true state of her non-existent love life.
The sound of a phone camera shuttering snaps Kisa out of her musings.
Gray eyes blink as Jiyuu, who has gotten up, fiddles with his phone.
“What--”
Jiyuu turns his phone screen to show the picture he has taken of her. She’s looking forward and smiling at nothing. Kisa doesn’t know why Jiyuu even bothers taking a picture of something like that.
“For Kori.”
“F-for--”
Her heartbeat quickens and she grabs Jiyuu’s hand holding the phone.
A chat window is open and Kori Kou’s name is at the top. Her picture sits innocently there, just waiting to be seen.
Kisa’s eyes widen as beside her, she hears Kanako start to laugh.
“It’s a cute picture though, Kisa-chan!”
Kisa is not having it and practically dives for the phone. “Jiyuu Akari! You unsend that right now!”
And Jiyuu, with the face of an angel, the heart of a demon, and the reach of a tree, sticks his tongue out at her and playfully replies,
“No.”
(Kisa ends up chasing Jiyuu down a couple of hallways and into a storeroom where it ends with a very threatening kabedon. It fuels the dating rumors further, but they don’t care. The picture gets unsent and Kori never receives weird, random pictures of Kisa ever again.)
(Or so Kisa thinks.)
Kanako, Kisa and Jiyuu are in an actual high school out of curiosity. They just figured they'd try it out. Their school is the one Kirei and Sayaka (maybe even Tetsuya) went to in the past. And while they do end up with their own set of friends, they still end up eating lunch with each other a lot.
They're popular because of the hoshiko thing plus their fathers being part of Hoshiko, though they'll likely be campus figures just because they're them. Jiyuu easily becomes a heartthrob. Kanako is warm, friendly and charismatic, also fun, flirty, and hot. Kisa is less attention-grabbing but she's pretty and friendly, too, and likely works to get on the honor roll.
Jiyuu and Kisa are close because they're of the same age and Kanako and Kisa are bestfriends. They spend a lot of time together growing up and have become very comfortable with each other like siblings. Because of this, they don't see each other romantically at all despite how it may have worked. Jiyuu is very supportive of Kori/Kisa and yes, sends Kori updates on what Kisa's been up to at school and also pictures though she's told him quite forcefully not to (see "very threatening kabedon"). He stops when Kori tells him to stop.Probably.
